What is the story?
Centering round the love of Elizabeth, a princess of France and Don Carlo, their future together is destroyed when Don Carlo's father, the despotic King Philip II of Spain takes her hand, making the lovers into mother and son. As war rages endlessly, romance is tested further by duty and religion. This devastating and emotional tale still packs a punch some 150 years after it first premiered.
