YOU’RE NOT DOIN’ SO FINE, OKLAHOMA

What a colossal disappointment this version of Oklahoma was! The ‘set’ can best be described as drab and lazy—consisting of plain wood tables, folding chairs, and a few dozen cans of beer. Adorning the set walls were gun racks and what looked like stick on ‘tap’ lights. Oh…and…the 6 banners of mylar ‘fringe’ draped across the ceiling, an ode to the surrey’s fringe. The actors—when not saying their lines—appeared disengaged & bored. Costuming, hair and makeup were lackluster to say the least. Curly did have a lovely voice and there were a handful of moments that made me laugh. First half: painfully SLOW. BUT—just when you thought it couldn’t get worse—a LONG dream sequence w/a girl dancing, trotting like a horse in a white t-shirt to a LOUD air guitar had me thinking I’d smoked something during the intermission. The whole thing ended with the lead characters splattered in blood, angrily belting out OKLAHOMA! Listen, Oklahoma you’re doin’ fine, but this new woke version was a true stinker.

WORST PROFESSIONAL SHOW I’VE EVER SEEN!

Off pitch singing, awkward blocking, slow, slow, slow. Left at intermission along with many others.

OKLAHOMA! A HEINOUS INTERPRETATION OF CLASSIC SHOW

1 star out of 5. Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy. This show was a mess. I couldn't believe what I was watching - a complete bastardization of the classic show Oklahoma! This "re-interpretation" was so bad, so bizarre, that people were looking around in shock, seeking some validation that what was happening on stage was not a personal nightmare they were experiencing. Imagine: the fun, campy show Oklahoma! but DARK. Complete with a (not very good) extremely bizarre interpretive dance that goes on for SO long mid-show, a blacked out stage with only slurping sounds playing, a boring, unchanging (if confusing) set, and an odd, fake blood soaked horror-ish spin on the ending. Please, save yourself! Don't watch this show. (Unless you want to laugh at how horrible it was, like we did.)

CREEPY

I keep thinking about it. Maybe that was the goal. I couldn’t, however, recommend anyone going to see it. I felt sorry for the actors. They were great. It’s just weird and kind of depressing.

A PAINFUL MASHUP OF IDENTITY CRISIS

Left my wife and I truly baffled. This attempted "update" eschews any connection to the original in favor of a set that could be Syria versus the US, costumes that do nothing to bring storyline cohesion, and a stripped down score that felt framed to remove even a hint of celebration. The modern character substitution way over-reached to the point of just absurd (no, I am not anti-inclusion). Honestly, Jud presented as a maladjusted, serial killer in training. It was dark and brooding, not a hint of redemption anywhere. Granted, they stuck to the original script and lyrics but managed to refocus all energy on the sinister elements of the story. As long time theatre patrons thrilled with the post-pandemic return of live shows - this one missed the mark by a country mile.

LEFT AT INTERMISSION.

We don’t leave shows early, but it was torture to stay that long. I get updating, but this bore little or no resemblance to the original. Did not like the casting, acting, set, singing, choreography, effects. Arrived anticipating an enjoyable, entertaining evening, left confused and disappointed. Just need to know going in that this is a completely different take.

HORRIBLE

Bad bad bad ! No chemistry at all. Boring dialogue left before intermission.
