Why See Dallas Opera: Iolanta?

A seldom performed treasure

Fall in love with the bewitching beauty of the fairy tale of the accursed Iolanta. The Princess is kept from the world in a secret and beautiful garden, unaware of her lineage, or her lack of sight. Her father, The King still hopes for a cure, but when presented with the very thing by the sorcerer Ibin-Hakia, he fears that Iolanta's world will be changed forever...

Tchaikovsky's magical one act opera explores the world of mind and body, as Iolanta languishes in her garden, contented, but always feeling that something is missing. It has the romantic hallmarks and mixture of laughter and sadness that will surely put you under a lush spell.

Medieval Provance: What is Iolanta about?

Death will befall anyone who should trespass in Iolanta's garden, but that doesn't bother Vaudemont, for whom curiosity is too much. When he comes across the sleeping Princess, he immediately loses his heart and asks for just one thing to remember her. Enraptured by this bold stranger, Iolanta offers a rose, but is unable to tell him the color. For the first time ever, she is opened up to the world of light and color, which is just what she needs to take the cure...
