Shall We Dance?

A much-treasured piece of musical theatre history comes to Dallas, as Dallas Summer Musicals brings the iconic The King and I to life in a breathtaking production starring Rachel York! Set in 19th Century Thailand, this romantic tale tells the story of a widowed governess, who is charged with teaching the severe King of Thailand's myriad royal offspring, and the journey that they both take as they teach each other about respect, culture and the celebration of love.

Getting to know you: A Background

When The King and I opened, the famous creators had their doubts. They joked that audiences were only coming to see if it was better than their hit South Pacific, but they needn't have worried, The King and I went on to become an overnight hit, with the original production winning five Tony Awards. Its film adaptation, famous for Yul Brenner's commanding performance opposite Deborah Kerr in her voluminous ball-gowns, won five Academy Awards.

Combining their musical elegance and brilliance, dramatics and dancing, The King and I has become synonymous with the great Broadway classics that sweep you away, time and time again.
